REVIEW: A superlative live recording
of Messiah under the direction of
Ruben Dubrovsky with the Bach Consort Wien and
Salzburger Bachchor. Apparently the
soundtrack to an accompanying
Blu-Ray and DVD, this is an exciting
document with joyous, clear singing and
playing, top-notch soloists, and clear,
vibrant sound with plenty of warm, natural
ambiance. The Bach Consort Wien
plays with wonderful sharp contrasts and
emotional verve; no cold baroque glassiness
here - and Dubrovsky is electric with his
conducting - fiery and delineated. The
soloists are all equally fine: tenor Michael
Schade has rich tone, powerful yet tender, and
perfectly controlled, dripping with
expression. Christian Immler practically
bursts off the stage with an immense presence
and vibrant tone. Mezzo Gaia Petrone,
hailing from Italy, is similarly fierce and
perfect in her fiery melismas, while Hanna
Herfertner possesses a sterling tone and
enviable technique. The Slazburger
Bachchor is under wonderful control in their
biting consonants and utter conviction - a
thrilling performance with good blend,
hampered only by the somewhat muddy acoustic,
and single-take live recording, which
occasionally captures extant noise - but
redeemed by their wonderful emotional heft
they bring to the performance. I'm happy
to say that the first Messiah of 2017 is
top-drawer and definitely worth adding to your
collection.
