SITE REVIEW:
An amateur performance in every aspect, this Messiah,
taped in Jerusalem "along the Sea of
Galilee" is far less inspirational that it aspires to be. From the
clumsy camera work, to the unfocused, shallow recorded sound, to the
clumsy editing - everything about this production points to the
cheapness of its producers. The video begins with a gauzy text
prelude which emphasizes Messiah's obvious scriptural origins, then,
for some reason, the editors decide to show the pre-concert
announcements, with a slovenly-looking man in sports jacket and jeans
telling the audience to shut off their cell phones. Next, he
introduces the spiritual leader of the Church of the Multiplication of
the Bread and the Fish: Father Jeremiah, who in nearly unintelligible
in his un-amplified welcome. The director and soloists enter, and
finally the actual concert begins. As I've mentioned in my review of the CD
of this performance, the chorus, soloists, and direction all are
sub-par; but all of their faults are amplified by the viewing
experience, which shows just how shoddy the production values of this
performance are: camera work that's limited and unimaginative, recorded
sound that fluctuates between natural and recorded acoustics; and
generally poor editing. For a release that is supposed to
showcase Messiah in all its
grand spiritual context, this is a sadly flat performance - much more
care should have been taken, but as it stands, this performance is one
of the poorest on video.
