REVIEW: A stunning new performance
of Messiah, expertly filmed and
produced by the American Bach Soloists, this
high-definition, surround-sound blu-ray is
without equal. This is the second time
that Jeffrey Thomas and the American Bach
Soloists have released a recording of Messiah,
the first, in 2004,
I thought was pristinely performed, but cold
and distant in its execution. This
recording rectifies that fault, by showing us
the performer's faces, which are committed,
serene, and perfectly in harmony with each
other. The performers are all stunning,
with tenor Kyle Stegall a wonderful discovery,
with clear lines and masterful delivery - but
he's equaled by the other soloists, with
baritone Jesse Blumberg a commanding presence
with wonderful tone, countertenor Eric
Jureanas electrifying in his brilliant solos
and masterful melismas, and soprano Mary
Wilson brilliant and clear. The American
Bach Soloists and Choir are amazingly unified
and balanced, with pure sound and crisp
diction - a model of how a modern baroque
ensemble should sound. Conductor
Jeffrey Thomas has tempos well in hand, with a
slow, beautifully-delineated opening Sinfonia
giving way to sensitive, occasionally playful
tempos which I found extremely sympathetic to
the moment. The production values on
this blu-ray are exceptional - the
unintrusive, multi-angle shots cover the
beautiful Grace Cathedral, but not skimping on
long shots of the performers. It's a
highly professional production, with the
high-definition details adding depth and
detail to the nearly flawless
performance. Highly recommended.
