REVIEW: Madacy has
gotten a lot of mileage out of this lumbering,
mechanical 1958 recording. Repackaged
again and again in different guises, but with
the same rusty engine underneath, what once
started out as a 101 Strings production, and
released in England on the budget PYE label,
has since migrated to the States and
beyond. Often saddled with the
misleading tag line "The Original Manuscript",
this performance is long in the tooth
both in age and performance. Sound wise,
it's in good condition, a stereo release, with
better fidelity than, say, the Bernstein Messiah,
but director Walter Susskind's direction is so
lackluster, so heavy, that even though the
oratorio cuts nearly ten tracks (mostly from
section two), it feels much, much longer than
fuller performances. As to the soloists,
they are a mixed lot, with soprano April
Cantello fairing best with her easy,
effortless arias, tenor Wilfred Brown tries
too hard to impress, bass Roger Stalman is
throaty and heavy, as is alto Helen Watts with
her Wagnerian swells. The Choir and
orchestra are adequate, but neither is helped
by the thudding tempi and unimaginative
direction.
