REVIEW: A severely
truncated performance, spread out over two
discs, this English-language Messiah
(despite the Germanic title) comes from
Hungary, with Austrian conductor Bernhard
Sieberer taking the helm of the
Budapest-based Aura Musicale, and the
Vokalensemble Vocapella Inssbruck
chorus. This is a somewhat heavy,
deliberate performance, and, not finding any
other information as to when and where this
performance took place, I have to assume that
it's a live concert performance, although I
can't detect any audience presence. The
recorded ambience is warm and open, with good
balance between the singers and
orchestra. Tenor Christoph Pregardien is
good, although a little thick in his timbre -
he chooses some ear-catching ornamentation in
his solos, which I enjoyed. Bass Markus
Flaig is similarly endowed with a rich tone,
but pleasing delivery, although his German
accent is somewhat pronounced. French
countertenor Pascal Bertin is quite good - one
of the best countertenors I've heard on a
Messiah (and which I generally don't
appreciate) - but his performance and
investment in his arias are excellent, with a
stunning tone and delivery. German
soprano Monika Mauch is good, but a little
stiff and proper in her reading. The
Vocapella Innsbruck chorus is similarly
competent, with good blend and unity, lacking
only a distinctive presence. The tempos
throughout are frestratingly moderate, rarely
rising above a walking tempo - and
occasionally glacial, as in the eleven-minute
plus "He Was Despised" - and the conductor
makes the head-scratching choice of inserting
two brief movements of Handel's Concerto
Grosso No. 3 before two moments -
leading into the chorus "Behold The Lamb Of
God" and again before "I Know That My Redeemer
Liveth!" A curious recording, which has
many good elements, but is frustratingly
lacking a spark of excitement or fervor, which
may explain why it has taken six years to be
digitally released. On two separate
discs, which you can find here
and here.
