REVIEW: A worthy live
recording, made by the Swiss ensemble
Bach-Kantorei under the direction of Wilfried
Schnetzler, and released on their own
label, I found this performance
well-prepared and presented, and lacking only
the joyous sparkle and perfect polish which
would rate it higher. Recorded in the
Church Linsebühl, St. Gallen, the sound is quite
marvelous - close and well-defined, with plenty
of natural acoustic giving the recording much
warmth. Amongst the soloists, I found
tenor Hermann Osward the clear favorite - his
warm, heroic tone and delivery full of passion
and sparkle. Next, alto Elizabeth McQueen
is darkly dramatic and quite splendid, even
fiery in her arias. Compared to them,
soprano Ruth Amsler and bass Wolf Matthias
Friedrich sound a bit forced and unfocused, not
helped by the live setting, but are still quite
good. The Ensemble ad fontes play on
modern instruments, and are excellent, while the
Bach-Kantorei are perhaps the weakest link, with
rote singing and occasional pitch and unity
issues - again, not helped by being captured in
a live concert setting, which does not allow for
error. Wilfried Schnetzler's tempos are
moderate; he doesn't aim for fireworks, even
when they would liven things up a great
deal. All in all, a pleasant, high-quality
performance, captured in good sound, but not a
first pick for collections.
