REVIEW: Helmuth
Rilling is a unique director - he has recorded
two of the Mozart arrangements of Messiah
between 1994 and 2000, the first is part of a
DVD and in German (of which this is the
soundtrack); the second with the Oregon Bach
Festival Orchestra, and in English. This
first recording, from 1994, is idiosyncratic
enough, with an overture that bullets out of
the starting gate with more speed than I've
ever heard on a Messiah; a tenor, Roberto
Saccà, who has one of the brightest tones I've
heard (he sounds as if he's singing a
quarter-tone sharp all the time!), a very
flutey soprano with Donna Brown, and tempos
that all are over the map - but rather than
being annoying, I really enjoy this Der Messias
- it has the effect of constantly surprising
me with the choices Rilling has made, and when
you have an entire field of Der Messiahs
to choose from - this one has the ability to
"cleanse the palate" as it were. Not a
first choice, by any means, even for a Mozart
Der Messias,
but if you're tired of the same old versions,
give this one a listen, and see if it opens
your ears.
