REVIEW: In the liner
notes for this highlights collection of
Messiah, Professor Emeritus Alfred Mann
claims no special genius in the creation of
this recording; the only reason he gives for
this disc was ...well, basically, because
they could. The occasion being the
three hundredth anniversary of Handel's
birth, and the forces being the Eastman
School
of Music. Sounds like as good a reason
as any to make a record, right? As a
performance, it's certainly competent, but
no more than that; the soloists, who are
generously doled out between several
students, at times struggle with the
technical demands of the work, but the
chorus and orchestra perform well, but
again, without any distinctive style or
command over the music. It's a studio
recording, done in the school's own studios,
which surprised me, I would've guessed this
project would have been live, and probably
could have benefited from the energy of a
live setting. I imagine if you were a
student or parent of a student who took part
in this recording, this would be a nice
keepsake, but for anyone else, I can't
imagine that it would hold any appeal except
for die-hard collectors. First issued in
1985 on Word, then reissued (why?) in 1991
on Allegretto, this album has been popping
up on anonymous "budget" labels in recent
years, but in whatever guise, it has been
surpassed many times by far more affecting
