REVIEW: It says
something discouraging about human nature that
a Messiah
such as this, which has been around long
enough to survive both the vinyl, CD, and
digital download revolutions, continues to be
marketed and sold to an unsuspecting public.
It's horrible through and through, with
sound that appears to have been taken from an
audience tape recorder, tempos that race
nearly as much as Minkowski's
folly, and it's only redeeming feature
in that it's a scant 43 minutes long. No
one is credited here, which is probably all to
the best, since no one would conceivably wish
to lay claim to this monstrosity. The
choir and symphony, which uses the anonymous
"Cathedral" moniker, apparently only has one
claim to fame: they're big. "Over 100
Voices & Strings" the cover announces, and
despite their size, they're able to move at a
pace that seems to be striving for a Guinness
World Record. "Since By Man Came Death"
races along at an unreasonable rate, and the
choir and orchestra blaze through the final
"Amen" as if they all had someplace urgent
they needed to get to. A shockingly
cynical recording that should be avoided by
all.
