REVIEW: Sometimes,
a recording just sneaks up on me - despite
me regularly checking for new releases, this
one has apparently been out for over a year,
and I hadn't heard it. Recorded and
released independently through the New
Mexico Symphonic Chorus, this
performance falls comfortably into the range
of "regional" recordings which pepper the
market, and make no pretensions of breaking
out of their geographical niche. Roger
Melone, who conducts, keeps everything light
and dancing, but the tempos occasionally
drag, turning some of the dancing into a bit
of a lurch. The New Mexico Symphonic
Chorus is the weak link here, with
disunity, some stiff melismas, and suspect
pitch on occasion, but bringing real
proficiency and power to many of the more
robust choruses. Being a live
performance, and apparently recorded at a
single event, there was no fixing of problems,
and audience noise is present with coughing
and sneezing captured and is often quite
noticeable. The soloists are uniofrmly
good - easily the best recommendation here,
with soprano Clara Rottsolk possessing a
lovely Bel Canto tone, fluid and
beguiling. Countertenor Ian Howell is
very proficient, with a smooth, mellow tone;
tenor Michael Colvin is similarly good, and
bass David Grogan is superb - with a rich,
but not overpowering, presence. There's much to recommend here,
and although not as revelatory a group as Chicago's Apollo's
Fire, still has many fine moments, and
is worth hearing.
