REVIEW: A live
recording from December 2011, this Messiah,
under the direction of Mark Mangini features
some lovely moments in the beginning, with
delicious, controlled playing from the South
Fork Chamber Orchestra on the opening
Sinfonia. Tenor Nils Neubert is
similarly very fine, with a rich, romantic
tone and expert phrasing on both "Comfort
Ye" and "Ev'ry Valley". Unfortunately,
from those opening moments, things go
quickly downhill. The Choral Society
of the Hamptons simply don't come near the
expertise of either the orchestra or soloist
which preceded them, with extremely
amateurish singing, poor tone, disunity, and
bad pitch. Baritone Mischa
Bouvier is simply OK, sounding affected and
a bit unsure. Mezzo-soprano Suzanne
Schwing is better, but is hampered somewhat
by tempos that start to drag, and the
tendency to lunge up to notes. Soprano
Rada Hastings sounds tremulous and somewhat
intimidated in her arias, with a tendency to
become shrill in her upper register.
Mingini's direction, which seems so sure and
confident at the first, becomes more slow
and clumsy as the program goes on, and its
evident that the limitations of the forces
he's conducting have hamstrung him. In
conclusion, except for a few moments, this
recording is simply too amateurish to
recommend.
