SITE RATING:  8/10
SITE REVIEW:   One of the rarest Messiah CD's to find, this out-of-print 1993 recording, released on the Holland-based STH Records label was provided to me by Baroque-connoisseur Yvan Raoux, who highly recommended it, and I am eternally grateful to him for his generosity.  Pieter Jan Leusink, who has recorded two other performances of Messiah, is consistently excellent in his interpretation of Handel's masterwork, with light, dancing tempos, small, baroque forces, and clean, clear execution.  The Florilegium Musicum baroque orchestra is finely delineated in its playing, while the boys and men of Stadsknapenkoor Elberg choir acquit themselves admirably with the difficult choruses, with powerful lower voices nicely balanced against the finely-trained trebles - an impressive choir, overall.  The soloists are more spotty - soprano Maja Roodveldt is a revelation - her brilliant tone and cheerful, masterful performance are simply perfection.  Tenor Paul Van Den Bemt has an odd tone to his voice - a quavery, nasal quality which distracts, and at times is almost comic in its effect.  Counter-tenor Sytse Bulwada is quite good, with a pleasant, mellow quality to his arias, while bass Julian Hartman's deep resonant tone is pleasant, although not as commanding or powerful as others, sounding a bit hollowed out in his upper register.  The recorded sound is quite lovely, recorded in the 15th-Century church of Grote Kerk, Vollenhove, with warm natural acoustics and an excellent pipe organ.  I wish that I could tell you where to find this recording, but it is very rare, but being of high quality, if you should happen upon a copy, I would not hesitate to recommend you add it to your collection.
