REVIEW: I’m a
little confused about this release at the
moment. That’s because the label that’s
released it in digital format here in the
States, Amsterdam Classics, show it’s original
recording date as 2006 - and according to my
investigation, director Pieter Jan Leusink did
indeed record a Messiah in 2006, but
with the Holland Boys Choir, not the Bach
Choir as shown here. Adding to this,
Amsterdam Classics is releasing a new
recording of Messiah in July 2013, with
director Leusink, again with The Bach Choir
and Orchestra of the Netherlands, but with two
of the soloists different from what is listed
on this digital release! So, is
the release information wrong, or is this a
separate, THIRD Messiah from Leusink?
At this point I do not know, but I have
ordered the Holland Boys Choir version, and am
expecting to receive the new Messiah box later
this year, so hopefully I can straighten out
all the confusion.
That said, this is a generally sparkling
performance - the Bach Orchestra of the
Netherlands play with light precision, and
Leusink keeps tempi dancing and moderate
throughout. Tenor Martinus Leusink (yes,
the director’s son) is not as commanding as I
would like on his arias, sounding somewhat
uneven on his melismas, and with a tone that
is on the thin side. Bass Math Dirks has
a fine tone, lacking only a truly brilliant
presence to vault his performance into the
upper echelon of Handellian basses.
Countertenor Sytse Buwalda is wonderful - warm
and expressive, displaying enviable
sensitivity in his arias. Soprano
Miranda van Kralingen sounds oddly tremulous
on her first recitatives, almost as if she’s
unprepared for the moment, but later redeems
herself with a warm, generous “Rejoice
greatly.” The Bach Choir of the
Netherlands is not recorded evenly, with the
upper registers being sometimes overpowered by
the lower, but their tone and commitment are
excellent.
