REVIEW: I first became
aware of this recording through the short EP
download released by tenor Barry Craft;
unimpressed by the heavy-handed and amateurish
performance of his, I later discovered that
there was a full-length Messiah performance
available through Craft's website, but didn't
rush to purchase it. Now however, the
album has been made available as an
inexpensive download, and am able to place his
performance in its full context.
Recorded live in Japan(?), with
Norweigian conductor Terje Kvam leading the
Telemann Chamber Orchestra and Quodlibet Choir
(under the baton of Yoshifumi Hata), this Messiahis
a workman-like production, with flat, dim
accoustics, square direction, and soloists who
all fare about the same as Barry Craft, or
somewhat better. Soprano Heather Sarris
is bright and genial in her arias, seemingly
unaware of the gravitas of the text she is
singing; alto Pamela Dellal is solid, but
emotionally removed from her arias, and bass
David Murray is competent, but nothing more.
The Quodlibet Choir sings with a thick
palette of sound which isn't helped by the
occasinally ponderous tempos or the flat
recorded sound, which serves to emphasize the
Choir's occasionally distracting Eastern
accent. The entire performance simply
feels heavy and flat, with talents which tend
to veer closer to the amateur level than a
polished, professional troupe. I
recommend passing this one by, unless you are
a Messiah
completist.
