REVIEW: This 1989
recording conducted by Jaroslav Kr(e)check and
performed by the Bratislava City Choir and
Capella Istropolitana on the Naxos label is a
good, solid, if unspectacular collection of
the Messiah choruses, as well as the Overture
and Pastoral Symphony. Sung in English,
the German chorus sing with noticeable accents
throughout, but that's not as distracting as
the overly-bright tones adopted by the soprano
and tenor voices, which sound occasionally
shrill. Also, there are moments of
disunity within the chorus, leading to some
sloppy passages. Kr(e)check's tempos are
mostly on the moderately bright side, with
nothing jumping out at the listener as
extreme. It's a safe, competent reading
- but little which moved me. The
recorded sound is also a little dim - lacking
the depth and definition which would have
helped in some of the articulation which is
lost in the muddied acoustics - only the
trumpets sound overly mic'ed, punching out of
the fabric of sound and often overpowering the
chorus with their enthusiasm. In all,
its a good, solid performance, but there are
other, better choices for those seeking a
"just the choruses" highlights disc.
