REVIEW: Warner
Brothers label Erato has done everyone a great
service by reissuing several of their
out-of-print Messiah recordings in budget
packaging and remastered sound; this live
recording from 1983 with Ton Koopman and The
Sixteen is particularly fine, with Koopman
giving the oratorio an exceedingly smooth,
velvety reading, which is a great pleasure to
listen to. Nothing here is jarring, or
overly ornate - the attacks and dynamics are
all very moderate, with the Amsterdam Baroque
Orchestra giving a finely finessed performance
of the score, The Sixteen are all vocal
perfection as usual, but benefit tremendously
by being captured in a live setting - it adds
to their warmth and expression, and the
soloists are uniformly excellent, Gregory
James having a vibrant tessatura and alto
James Bowman having a lovely golden mellowness
to his tone. There is some different
ornamentation applied by the soloists as well,
which I found effective, without being
terribly ostentatious. This is such a
genial, good natured Messiah that it easily melts
into the background while listening; I prefer
a bit more drama and fireworks in my Messiahs,
but this one, with it's warm, buttery
constitution, is a perfectly agreeable,
exceedingly gentle listen.
