SITE RATING:  7/10
SITE REVIEW:  Although I cannot find any recording dates present on this release, I'm going to assume that's it's circa 1993, since the Ft. Worth Orchestra website lists the CD release date as 1994.  Also according the liner notes, the Oratorio Chorus of Southwestern Seminary is comprised of students from the School of Church Music at Southwestern (Baptist Theological Seminary) as well as "auditioned singers" from the Fort Worth-Dallas metroplex.  A highlights disc that features the soloists as much as the popular choruses, this Messiah performance receives high marks from me for the sensitive playing, and generally high level of performance, although this disc again reveals the limitations of regional talents and the pitfalls of live recordings. Tenor Jack Coldiron possesses a pleasant, somewhat fruity tone which lacks great power, but has fine expressiveness.  Bass David Robinson is blessed with a powerful, heroic presence, and acquits himself well, giving a fiery reading of "But who may abide".  Alto Angela Cofer is given a single moment with "O Thou that tellest good tidings" and also give a fine, straightforward performance.  While soprano Linda Poston-Smith sounds strained and stretched-out in her upper register. The Southwestern Seminary Oratorio Chorus' blend is helped by the natural acoustics of the Ft. Worth Boys Choir Great Hall, but suffers from slight intonation and pitch problems throughout, but sings with lovely tone and blend, giving affecting, passionate readings of the choruses.  Conductor C. David Keith's direction is safe and competent, albeit he tends to plod through some of the more joyous moments, such as a languid "For The Glory of the Lord".  One of the better regional performances on disc, it has enough strengths to make me wish the complete oratorio had been made available.
