REVIEW: A
chamber-music arrangement of parts of Messiah,
made for Organ, Trumpet, Cello, Flute and
Oboe, this recording strips the arrangement
down even further, with Søren Johannsen
playing the organ, and Dorthe Zielke on trumpet.
The result is quite breathtaking - with
Zielke's fluid trumpet lines ringing out
majestically over Johannsen's majestic,
fully realized accompaniment. The
final product is not unlike John Pryce-Jones
very interesting re-scoring
of Messiah for Brass Choir, only here,
without the accompanying voices. In
this rendition, Handel's melodies come full
force to the front, with the baroque style
trumpet playing giving everything a
majestic, royal sheen. I realize that
not everyone will appreciate a full hour of
organ and trumpet music, but for a different
way of hearing Messiah, yet
one that still retains all the reverence and
majesty of the original work, this recording
can hardly be better. Highly
recommended.
