SITE RATING:  8/10
SITE REVIEW:  Chicago-based Baroque group His Majestie's Clerkes (now known as Bella Voce), has put out one of the most pleasing highlights discs I've heard.  Using small forces, their sound is highly defined, and this recording, released on the Narada label (with one of the more unfortunate covers to grace a Messiah album - it looks like it belongs in the children's aisle), is light, intimate, and with a joyful sense of dance throughout.  Combining male and female voice, their sound hearkens back to the boychoir sound of English Cathedrals, which may strike some as precious, but their clean, pure sound is ideal for Baroque pieces.  The sopranos attain a shimmering, transparent sound on their high notes, and the rest of the choir match them in their ideal.  "Glory To God" has a joyous bounce, while "Behold the Lamb of God" benefits from their long vocal lines and beautifully matched tones.  Some may find their delivery to be cool and antiseptic, but I found the entire performance to be eye-opening, allowing me to hear Messiah as if for the first time, and for me, that is what marks certain performances as worthy of recommendation.
