SITE REVIEW:
A Messiah from
the mid-1970s, this stylish, expert release featuring the Handel and
Haydn Society of Boston, under
the baton of Thomas Dunn
(this being the organization's third recording of Messiah by my count, the others
being the 1999 Parrott and the chorus
appearing on the 1958 Stone), the
orchestra and choir sing with fine distinction, with Dunn showing some
interpretive verve and imagination with his conducting, and the tempos
bridging the divide between Victorian broadness and Baroque swiftness.
The soloists are mostly excellent, with tenor George Livings
giving a pleasant, generally accomplished showing; alto Pamela Gore's
unsteady vibrato and throaty tone causing me to skip over her tracks.
Bass David Evitts is splendid, with a rich, resonant tone and
heartfelt delivery, and soprano Diana Hoagland posessing clear,
bell-like tones which were beautifully showcased on her stunning
melismas. Mezzo-soprano Barabara Wallace seems more distantly
placed, but has a lovely bell tone, and richer sound that she uses to
great effect. The Choir sings with great clarity and precision,
beautifully unified and tight - their tone and enunciation are among
the cleanest I've heard, while the Orchestra plays with equal attention
to perfection. This album, originally released on the
long-defunct Sine Qua Non / Superba label, I'm afraid that the masters
to this recording may be lost, which is a pity, since it's a polished
performance, with many standout moments that deserves to be restored
and re-released on CD.
