SITE RATING:  8/10
SITE REVIEW:  Immediately following the release of this, Sir Colin Davis's third Messiah recording, pundits immediately began to compare it with his first 1966 recording (why his 1984 Philips Messiah was ignored is a subject for debate), and this recent one was found uniformly lacking.  Also, there were distinct rumblings that there was an agenda behind this particular recording - that Davis, having watched from the sidelines during the Baroque revivalist movement of the last 25 years, had decided to make his own argument in favor of more modern instrumentation.  Granted, the 1966 recording, also with the London Symphony Orchestra was fresher, more immediate in its performance, and, at the time, considered the best Messiah of its generation.  But this one, recorded live, and captured in SACD/DSD audio, and accompanied by a fifty-minute-long highlights DVD, stands quite well on its own merits.  The LSO plays marvelously, the soloists, pulled from both the Baroque and other schools are uniformly excellent, and the London Symphony Chorus is slick and professional; so the fault (if there is indeed any to be found) lies with Sir Colin Davis.  Much like Robert Shaw's Telarc Messiah, this performance by Davis and the LSO feels more careful - not less refined, or less accomplished, simply less vital in its rhythms and attacks.  It's an older Messiah conducted by an older Davis, and the performance, perhaps inevitably, is more deliberate, and yes, slower.  It's still a "good" Messiah - even breathtaking at moments, but most, I believe, will prefer his first effort.
