REVIEW: This live
performance, taken from a Handel celebration
held in Japan, is a thrilling, vital document
- conductor Toshiki Misawa brings real fire
and passion to the performance, combined with
electrifying tempos and superb playing and
singing by the Cannons Concert Chamber Choir
& Orchestra. Although its
evident that the choir aren't singing in their
native tongue, their tone and precision is
brilliant - with enviable vocal color and
unity evidenced throughout. The
orchestra, playing on period instruments, are
models of clarity and spirit. The
soloists are similarly well-chosen, bass
Masato Makino has a vibrant tone, and sings
with breathtaking passion; alto Mutsumi
Hatano's tone is interesting, very violin-like
in its timbre, and unlike any I'd heard before
- but pleasing and ear-catching. Soprano
Nao Hirose possesses a lovely, lyrical tone,
and sings with great delicacy of feeling - a
lovely rose of a performance. Tenor
Hirohisa Tsuji is the only soloist I had mild
reservations over - his tone sounds a bit
swallowed and with a thin timbre, but he gives
a passionate performance, which covers a
multitude of sins with me. With such a
passionate, fiery recording, with pin-point
precision, yet infused with great feeling, I
can't help but give this CD an unreserved
recommendation. This recording is
currently only available in Japan, but I
ordered it from Amazon.co.jp and it was
shipped to me in two days!
